The Spanish founded Key West in 1513 while the Indians have been in the keys since 2000BC. The natural harbor would provide shelter during storms while the fresh water well would enable survival when ships stopped for resupply. As commerce increased in the 1800's the city became a very wealthy town. Turtle harvesting, cigar making, sponge farming, and of course fishing would sustain this seaport until tourism today. This tour will share all that and more.

Meeting Point

Dante's Pool Bar

12:10 PM

Ferry Terminal

The Dry Tortugas are 70 miles to the west. Fort Jefferson is known as the Gibraltar of the Caribbean. A ferry takes people out daily to what is now a national park. The terminal also supports ships going to and from Naples and Ft Myers.

12:20 PM

Turtle Kraals, Margaretville, and Sponges

We will stop at the famous distance marker and talk about some of the things that made key west as it relates to farming sponges, harvesting turtles, and selling t shirts. Plus a great tip for a place to visit to learn more about the island off the beaten path.

12:40 PM

Waterfront brewery and Western Union schooner

One of Wyland's famous murals is here. We will talk about the famous sailing ships that made this port one of their stops. Tips on sunset viewing provided as we talk about the seaport then and now at this spot.

01:00 PM

Shrimp Boat Studios and the Fish Farm

Yes a world famous recording studio on the docks. What was once the place that fisherman would sell their catch is now one of the more popular restaurants on the island.

01:10 PM

A&B Marina

One of the oldest restaurants still operating in the keys. This also serves as the harbor master site. We will talk about the private and charter boats tied up at the piers and how this marina operates today. A prime cigar smoking spot wil be pointed out and then we will take a secret cut thru to a rum distillery.

01:30 PM

Mallory Sq

We will wrap up the tour in the location that every night a sunset celebration is held. I will point out the original warehouses were wrecked cargo was brought for storage and auction which is what made Key West a very wealthy city. The tour ends here with a unique tidbit on the 2 islands just off shore from the cruise ship dock.
