In the 19th century,the Japanese government invited pioneers from the United States and Europe to cultivate Hokkaido.

Development was promoted based in Sapporo.

So now you can see Western architecture in Sapporo where is prefectural capital in Hokkaido :)

William smith Clark, the person who contributed most to the development of Hokkaido, founded Hokkaido University to spread agriculture and Christianity in Hokkaido.
