7 Hidden Gems to Visit in Prague

by GoWithGuide travel specialist

As one of Europe’s most beautiful and well-kept cities, Prague is a dream destination equipped with every kind of tourist’s fancy. From must-see architectural wonders in the city’s Old Town, to traveling in aristocratic elegance through the Vltava River, to shopping to your heart’s delight on Paris Street, the city of a hundred spires supplies pools of allurement for days on end.

Once you’ve roamed the cobblestone streets around Old Town Square and have taken in all the history and architecture of the Jewish Quarter, you may feel all crowded out. Luckily, the Czechian capital is also rich in little hidden gems perfect for some exploration and excitement. Our Prague private tour guides have shared with us some of their favorites to tour through.

Strahov Library - The Library of Dreams

The Strahov Monastery possesses one of the best kept secrets of Prague, and possibly one of the most beautiful libraries in the world - the Strahov Library. Filled to the brim with books dating back to the 12th century, this Baroque Library is one of the most scenic quiet spots in the city.

The oldest part of the library, the Theological Hall, overflows with history, keeping in its shelves translations of old theological writings. The Philosophical Hall, too, is another room not to miss. With its high ceiling and wide spaces, the hall is the largest room in the library. Make sure to look up and appreciate the frescoes of man’s evolution decorating the ceiling. Sedlec Ossuary - An Uncanny Chapel

Just on the outskirts of Prague in the suburb of Kutna Hora is the Sedlec Ossuary. Also known as the Bone Church, this spectacular chapel is as odd as it is beautiful, having been made from real bones. If you’re looking for a spooky time, then this is your best day trip idea yet. Why not customize your very own Prague ghost walking tour?

In 1278, Henry, the abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Sedlec returned from a trip to Jerusalem, carrying with him some earth from the Holy Land. After scattering the earth over the cemetery, Sedlec became a desirable burial place for many. By 1870, woodcarver František Rint was tasked to put all the bones in order. Thus, this UNESCO Heritage Site was born.

See a Puppet Show - A Stringy Theater Performance

Tired of the usual theater spiel? Say no more, as Prague has a unique and unconventional show perfect for families with children. The National Marionette Theater holds various types of performances, from fun and amazing versions of Mozart’s pieces, to a whole show on Don Giovanni.

Not only is the theater enjoyable to visit, the building where it stands is actually historically important. It is the site of the Worldwide Puppetry Organization (UNIMA), which was established in 1929. If you enjoyed the show, feel free to take home a puppet of your own! Beer and Wine Spa - A Glass to Good Health

Ever wondered what it was like to bathe in some beer? Look no further, as Prague is the perfect city for just that. Having one of the highest beer consumption rates per capita, the Czechian capital not only treats you to a cold glass, but also allows you to soak in some good old ale. Do as the elders did in times of old and enjoy a few pints of beer whilst bathing in it too. Not only is it fun and relaxing, it has some amazing health benefits to boot!

If beer is not to your liking, then wine might just be it. A day at a wine spa is also a pretty common occurrence in this Bohemian wonderland. As with beer, bathing in red and white wine is also said to improve blood circulation. This experience is great for couples ready for a romantic night, or for friends who just want to relax and have some fun.

DOX Center for Contemporary Art

For a different perspective, enter the DOX Center for Contemporary Art, the largest independent institution of contemporary art in the country. The museum’s name comes from the Greek word “doxa”, meaning “a way of perceiving things”. The institution is eye-opening and fresh, a great respite from Baroque architecture.

Among our Czech tour guides favorite attractions at the DOX Center is the Gulliver Airship, a symbol of human nature’s desire to be free. Here is a place where your imagination can run wild. Enter the structure, explore its various parts and pieces, and feel the almost utopian atmosphere. We have to say, this is a totally different experience from the Prague Castle walking tour.

Divoka Sarka - A Green Oasis

For some nature, peace, and quiet, let your hair down at Divoka Sarka. Just outside the city center, this nature preserve is armed with a picturesque landscape - cliffs, hills, plateaus, and rolling greens. For a day in nature, Divoka Sarka will not disappoint.

Lots of outdoor activities can be enjoyed on the preserve. Have a picnic in the spring, swim in the summer, hike in the fall, and take walks in the winter. Whichever season you find yourself visiting, you are sure to enjoy Divoka Sarka extensively. Museum of Alchemists and Magicians

Followers of the dark arts will love this museum. This eerie structure can be found near Prague Castle right where alchemist Edward Kelley used to live. Alchemy became increasingly popular in the 16th century during the reign of King Rudolf II, who funded occult practices at the time.

Today, you can go back in time and witness the spectacular flair of this world. Admire artifacts and replica displays from olden times, and enter the actual tower and workshop where Edward Kelley made his concoctions. For an alternative adventure, the Museum of Alchemists and Magicians of Old Prague is downright mystifying.
